Family: Blaberidae
Common name: Simandoa cave cockroach; Simandoa cave roach; Extinct in the wild roach.
Simandoa conserfariam is a cockroach species “extinct” in the wild. “Extinct” inside quotes means that they are not technically extinct, but they only exist in captivity due to the destruction of their native cave in Guinea (W. Africa). Nymphs start out plain black but gradually develop yellow stripes as they grow. Adults have beautiful speckled olive green / gray wings in addition to yellow stripes on the abdomen and also red legs. This roach can’t fly but the species runs quickly and can climb smooth surfaces pretty fast – nymphs too – so be prepared. When handled however, they are much calmer. A specialized container with rubber sealing under the lid or the use of a thick layer of vaseline barrier at the top of the enclosure is a must! However, it could not survive outside of their enclosure.
