Porcellio pseudornatus (ex Porcellio sp. Malaga Monster) are what their former name suggests, monsters! They resemble Porcellio ornatus but these isopods are much larger and they also have yellow dots on the last part of their body, on the back. Porcellio pseudornatus are very interesting isopods. They are curious, bold and extremely active. It’s an isopod you are gonna love also for their vibrant personality. The young isopods have softer colors than the semi-adults / adults. This is a mix of mostly orange selected specimens. The common wild type is dark brown to almost black.

Porcellio pseudornatus ‘Orange Mix’ care

Size: adults may reach a total length of 25 mm. They have a disproportionately long body.
Activity: day; night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep only ⅕  moist with moss, pieces of rotting white wood and decaying leaves; also on the drier areas. Porcellio pseudornatus isopods require a much drier setup, good air flow and adequate ventilation.
Temperature: 18 – 28°C
Humidity: 45 – 55%; they can’t tolerate high humidity.
Diet: fruits, veggies, greens, fish-food, decaying leaves, rotting white wood, mushrooms, molting of invertebrates and reptiles. This large and secretive isopod requires protein as well, at least 2x each week. For alternative sources of protein be sure to check out our Protein mix foods. Also don’t forget a calcium source (cuttlefish bone, limestone & oyster seashell, limestone rock) to keep them healthy.
Difficulty: challenging
Reproduction rate: prolific in an established colony; medium to large litters of mancae. Maturity comes after 3 months. Seasonal breeders.
