Basionym: Hormetica verrucosa

Common name: Warty-glowspot cockroach, warty glowspot roach.

Lucihormetica verrucosa is a beautiful cockroach species that breeds well in captivity. The adult males have the characteristic warty orange glow spots on their pronotum, females don’t. The glow spots are mostly glowing in wild roaches. Most likely It has to do with their diet and others have tried to feed them various food items in order to get that glow in the dark, with no luck however. The nymphs are shiny with orange heads and if they are not eating they remain buried into the substrate.

Lucihormetica verrucosa care

Size: adults reach a length of 40 – 50 mm.
Activity: night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep ⅓ moist by spraying and/or with moss. The substrate can be a mixture of peat (without fertilizer) mixed with crushed rotting leaves, some coconut coir and a little sand. Make it at least 5 cm deep so that the nymphs can bury in when they need to. They also need hiding spots to go under and hide themselves during the day. These can be carton egg cases, cork bark, or hard bark from other trees.
⚠️ Their terrarium needs to be escape-proof, so that the adults cannot squeeze through the lid and escape.
Temperature: 18 – 29°C
Humidity: 50 – 70%
Diet: they are omnivorous; they eat fruits, greens & vegetables, fish flakes, isopod grub, decaying leaves, white rotting wood, dog/cat kibble, and they enjoy the weekly insect jelly.
Can climb?: yes; an escape-proof container must be used
Can fly?: no
Difficulty: easy
Reproduction rate: prolific; the female giving birth to about twenty dark-coloured, shiny nymphs with orange heads ca. 2 to 3 mm long, that like to burrow into the substrate.
Growth rate: They may take up to 3 – 6 months to mature.
