Elliptorhina javanica is a beautiful roach, always in the top list of those keeping roaches as pets. Its common name – Halloween hissing cockroach – derives from its black and orange-yellow striped coloration and its hissing sound when disturbed, which is produced when they forcefully expel air through the specially-adapted respiratory openings (spiracles) on the fourth segment of their body. Both the adults and nymphs of this species can climb smooth surfaces. A specialized container with rubber sealing under the lid or the use of a thick layer of vaseline barrier at the top of the enclosure is a must! However, it could not survive outside of their enclosure.

These can be carton egg cases, cork bark, or hard bark from other trees.
