Meet Cubaris sp. ‘Red Pak Chong’, a visually striking and highly sought-after isopod that sits right at the heart of the premium Cubaris family tree. Named after the Pak Chong district in north-eastern Thailand where they are believed to originate, these isopods are naturally linked to humid limestone karst and cave microhabitats.
Appearance & Characteristics While the name might imply a solid red isopod, the Red Pak Chong is actually a gorgeous tricolor morph. They sport a dark blue-grey body that is beautifully framed by pale, white-to-cream lateral frills (often called a “skirt”). Their most defining feature, however, is the vibrant splash of red-to-orange coloration on their faces and rear segments. As the animals mature, this contrast deepens and becomes even more defined. Like all species in the Cubaris genus, they have a robust, deeply segmented exoskeleton and possess the charming defense mechanism of conglobation—meaning they can roll themselves up into a perfect, tight little ball when startled.
Lineage & Hobby Appeal The ‘Red Pak Chong’ is actually the same undescribed species as the standard Cubaris sp. ‘Pak Chong’, representing a selectively bred or regional color morph with distinct red-orange markings. Interestingly, many in the hobby also believe that the Pak Chong line shares the exact same species classification as the famous “Rubber Ducky” isopod, simply standing as a separate, tricolor genetic line. Furthermore, this specific morph served as the foundational parent stock from which the spectacular pink “Cherry Blossom” Cubaris line was developed. Although, personally I will distance myself drom that belief, as I have put together Normal pak chongs X cherry blossoms (all verified) but I didn’t see any results in their offspring, other than those two species.
Because of their brilliant contrast, they make a fantastic display species that photographs beautifully against dark moss and cork bark. While they can be slightly shy when first introduced to a new environment, a settled colony will eventually become a moderately active and reliable group. They are the perfect choice for keepers looking to step up into premium Cubaris morphs, offering a distinctive, exotic look that stands out in any collection.
