Cubaris sp. ‘Helios’, isopod information > care > photos
Origin: Thailand.
Scientific name: Cubaris sp.
Trade name: Helios
Trade name Synonym: Rubber Ducky Helios
Family: Armadillidae
Common name: N/A
Isopoda World List: genus Cubaris
The Cubaris sp. ‘Helios’ is a stunning and highly sought-after isopod that captures the irresistible charm of the classic ‘Rubber Ducky’ in a slightly more petite, sun-kissed package. While they share the adorable “duck-face” appearance of their close relatives, the ‘Helios’ stands out as a distinct, much smaller species reaching about 12 millimeters in length. They earn their name from the Greek god of the sun (Ήλιος) due to their radiant golden-yellow coloration and beautifully polished, glossy exoskeletons. Originating from the humid limestone karst cave systems of Thailand, these isopods require a terrarium environment that closely mimics their natural habitat to thrive. They are a relatively shy, deep-burrowing species that appreciates a deep, nutrient-rich substrate with a strong moisture gradient, requiring high humidity alongside adequate ventilation to prevent stagnation. Because of their natural limestone origins, providing generous and constant access to calcium sources—such as limestone rock, crushed oyster shell, or cuttlefish bone — is an absolute must for healthy molting and successful breeding. While they can be a bit elusive and take patience to establish, their brilliant golden hues and captivating behaviors make the ‘Helios’ an incredibly rewarding gem for any dedicated keeper to cultivate.
