Armadillo officinalis ‘Tamarix’ is a striking, naturally occurring Mediterranean locality that stands out for its high-contrast, earthy patterning and robust build. Frequently drawing visual comparisons to the captive-bred ‘Dalmatian’ morph, ‘Tamarix’ displays a handsome, organic mix of slate-grey, warm cream, and muted brown mottling that reflects its wild origins. As a true conglobating species, these heavy-bodied isopods form tight, seamless spheres when disturbed, often holding their defensive roll much longer than standard Armadillidium species. Perhaps their most famous trait is their ability to stridulate; when startled, they can produce an audible clicking or hissing noise by rubbing their legs against the inside of their dense exoskeleton. Gentle, slow-growing, and exceptionally hardy, ‘Tamarix’ makes a fascinating, low-maintenance display group for any crustacean collection.

Size: adults may reach a length of 15 – 20 mm.
Activity: night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep ⅔ moist with moss, pieces of rotting white wood and also decaying leaves. Check out also our premium substrate and ultra premium substrate.
Temperature: 15 – 28°C
Humidity: 55 – 70%; they are adaptable.
Diet: fruits, veggies, greens, fish-food, decaying leaves, white rotten wood, lichen, mushrooms, molting of invertebrates and reptiles. They will enjoy a slightly higher protein-based diet, at least 2x times a week. Be sure to check out our Protein mix foods. Also don’t forget a calcium source (cuttlefish bone, limestone & oyster seashell, limestone rock) to keep them healthy.
