Porcellio ornatus ‘Witch’s Brew’, isopod information > care > photos > video
Origin: cultured morph.
Scientific name: Porcellio ornatus
Trade name: Witch’s Brew
Basionym: N/A
Synonyms: N/A
Family: Porcellionidae
Common name: Yellow Dot Isopod (for the common Porcellio ornatus).
The Porcellio ornatus ‘Witch’s Brew’ is a truly spectacular, large-bodied isopod that serves as a phenomenal display species for any dedicated keeper. Originally isolated by Kyle Kandilian at Roach Crossing, this captive-bred morph boasts a mesmerizing “potion-style” dalmatian mutation. Because this genetic anomaly only affects their dark pigmentation—clustering the melanin into erratic spots—their natural bright yellow and orange pigments are left entirely unaffected, creating a stunning, chaotic splatter of color against a brilliant white background. Beyond their striking appearance, these isopods are incredibly active, bold, and highly visible as they enthusiastically explore their enclosure. Native to the more arid regions of Spain, P. ornatus require a distinct approach to their habitat compared to standard moisture-loving tropical species. They thrive in setups with excellent cross-ventilation and a pronounced moisture gradient, meaning the vast majority of their enclosure should be kept bone-dry, with only one heavily hydrated corner or moss station to allow them to regulate their own moisture levels. High humidity or stagnant air can be quickly fatal to this species. Providing plenty of cork bark for climbing and hiding, alongside a staple diet of decaying hardwood leaf litter, supplemental protein, and a dedicated calcium source, will ensure this hardy, fast-moving, and magical colony flourishes in your collection.
