The Armadillidium pulchellum is a charming, dwarf species of isopod that is an absolute must-have for keepers who appreciate intricately patterned micro-fauna. Despite their tiny size, reaching only about 5 to 7 millimeters in length, they pack an incredible amount of visual appeal into a very small package. They boast a beautiful, ornate pattern of mottled oranges, yellows, browns, and blacks across their backs, and like all true pillbugs, they can roll into a perfect little sphere when startled. This species tends to be quite shy and loves to burrow deeply into the substrate, meaning you will most often get to admire their vibrant colors when gently lifting a slab of cork bark to peek at their hidden world. In larger numbers however, you will see more of them active in the open. To help this delightful species thrive, their habitat should include a standard moisture gradient—keeping about a third to half of the enclosure damp while leaving the rest dry—alongside plenty of deep substrate for tunneling and bark for secure cover. A staple diet of decaying hardwood leaf litter, supplemented with high-quality protein and a reliable calcium source, is essential, but their absolute favorite treat is natural lichen, which they will eagerly strip bare from the safety of their hides. While they have smaller broods and grow at a slower pace than larger, more prolific species, their endearing nature, ease of care, and stunning appearance make a thriving colony of A. pulchellum a deeply rewarding addition to any terrarium or collection.
