Common name (for the common A. pallasii): Pallas’s Pill Woodlouse; Pallas’s Pill Isopod.
With their semi-translucent orange color and the beautiful shape of their body, the Armadillidium pallasii ‘Orange’ from Corfu is one of the most beautiful Armadillidium spp and yet not widely offered for sale.
The species epithet pallasii (pronounced: palace-sea-eye) is honoring the zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas.
Armadillidium pallasii ‘Orange’, isopod care
Size: adults may reach a length of 24mm.
Activity: night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep ⅓ moist with moss, pieces of tree bark or cork bark and also decaying leaves. Check out also our premium substrate and ultra premium substrate. When this species is kept in an isopodarium / terrarium with the right humidity gradient, problems are not likely to arise.
Temperature: 15 – 30°C
Humidity: 60 – 75%; they don’t like it too dry.
Diet: fruits, veggies, greens, fish-food, moss, lichen, gammarus shrimp, decaying leaves, white rotten wood, molting of invertebrates and reptiles. They will enjoy a slightly higher protein-based diet, at least 2x times a week. Be sure to check out our Protein mix foods. Also don’t forget a calcium source (calcium triple boost, cuttlefish bone, limestone & oyster seashell, limestone rock) to keep them healthy. Large groups tend to have a voracious appetite and “eliminate” leaf litter quite fast.
Difficulty: easy.
Reproduction rate: fair; may take them a couple of months to get established, but after that they keep breeding well.
Growth rate: normal to fast.
