Trachelipus vespertilio populations appeared after 120 years in Slovenia! The first verified population of this species was in 1896 by Budde-Lund. Their color ranges from light brown (dull orange) to darker gray/brown individuals. What is interesting is the color of the youngsters (see photo below) that is ochre to yellow. Trachelipus vespertilio are easy to care for isopods, and moderately prolific.

Trachelipus vespertilio, isopod care
Size: adults may reach a total length of 20 mm.
Activity: day; night; early morning.
Terrarium: I keep them a little wetter than the Spanish Porcellio isopods. Thus, ⅓ moist at all times, with forest moss, pieces of rotting white wood and decaying leaves.
Temperature: 15 – 26°C
Humidity: 50 – 65%
Diet: fruits, veggies, greens, fish-food, decaying leaves, rotting white wood, lichen, mushrooms, molting of invertebrates and reptiles. This rare and secretive isopod requires protein as well, at least 2x each week. For alternative sources of protein be sure to check out our Protein mix foods. Also don’t forget a calcium source (cuttlefish bone, limestone & oyster seashell, limestone rock) to keep them healthy.
Difficulty: easy.
Reproduction rate: moderately prolific.
Growth rate: slow to normal.
