Porcellio flavomarginatus isopods have a stunning contrast of black and white and they are a diurnal species! They are pretty active and curious, exploring their surroundings.‘Their common name: Yellow-bordered Woodlouse is a direct translation of their species epithet: flavo (yellow) and marginatus (border), or as we say in our hobby: skirt. I am curious as to how it was named as such, since the vast majority of Porcellio flavomarginatus isopods are black and white. Only one location in Datça, Turkey has the Porcellio flavomarginatus with a yellow skirt and also a yellow zigzag pattern on their back. Porcellio flavomarginatus is a lovely isopod and easy to keep and breed. 🥰
Porcellio flavomarginatus, isopod care
Size: adults may reach a length of 20 mm.
Activity: daytime (diurnal).
Terrarium: keep ⅓ moist with moss, pieces of rotting white wood and also decaying leaves. They require good air flow and adequate ventilation. It’s a social Porcellio species that when established, breeds well. Check out also our premium substrate.
Temperature: 17 – 26°C
Humidity: 45 – 60%
Diet: fruits, veggies, greens, fish-food, forest moss, lichen, decaying leaves, rotting white wood, molting of invertebrates and reptiles. They will enjoy a slightly higher protein-based diet, at least 2x times a week. Be sure to check out our Protein mix foods. They prefer less fresh leaves. Also don’t forget a calcium source (cuttlefish bone, limestone & oyster seashell, limestone rock) to keep them healthy.

Reproduction rate: prolific, seasonal breeders (Spring and Summer).
