Origin: France, Italy.
Scientific name: Armadillidium maculatum
Trade name: Zebra Isopod
Basionym: NA
Synonyms (unaccepted): Armadillo maculatus, Armadillidium trianguliferum, Armadillidium willii.
Family: Armadillidiidae
Common name: Zebra Isopod.
The Armadillidium maculatum – or else known as Zebra Isopod which is both its common name and trade name – is one of the most popular and visually striking species in the isopod hobby. The white-striped is the wild type and it’s the standard for this species. All other colors are subsequent color varieties of this species. The trade name Zebra Isopod is purely descriptive of its bold black and white striped pattern, which bears a strong resemblance to a zebra. However, this pattern serves a functional purpose in nature. The Armadillidium maculatum isopods are very easy to keep and breed. They are prolific and they also produce many mancae with each brood. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that they like it a bit more moist than the average Armadillidium standard.
