We formulated this hybrid substrate to provide the perfect balance of aeration, moisture retention, and essential minerals.

  • Organic Soil: Provides a natural, rich environment with trace decaying organics for your springtails to graze on.
  • Micro-Charcoal Chips: Acts as the structural backbone of the mix. These tiny, highly porous chips prevent the soil from compacting, hold onto essential moisture, and provide massive surface area for explosive population growth.
  • Calcium Carbonate: The secret to thriving cultures. We pre-mix the perfect ratio of pure calcium to support rapid reproduction and healthy exoskeleton development, saving you the hassle of dusting it in yourself.
  • Kaolin (White Clay): A premium mineral amendment that locks in humidity and provides trace nutrients, giving your springtails the stable, high-end environment they need to multiply.

Getting your new culture started is quick and easy.

  1. Hydrate: Pour the desired amount of substrate into your culture container. Slowly add dechlorinated water and mix gently until the substrate is damp and clumps slightly when squeezed. Avoid adding so much water that it pools at the bottom.
  2. Seed: Gently introduce your starter culture of springtails onto the surface of the damp substrate.
  3. Feed: While the organic soil provides initial grazing material, begin offering your preferred springtail food (like nutritional yeast, fish flakes or other) in small pinches once the population starts moving around.
  4. Maintain: Keep the container sealed to retain high humidity, and when you open the lid to feed, that’s already enough of fresh air, as they don’t need it either way. Pour a little water when the surface begins to look dry.
