Hemithyrsocera vittata, cockroach information

Origin: India; Burma; Thailand; Cambodia; China (Yunnan); China (Fujian); China (Guizhou).
Scientific name: Hemithyrsocera vittata.
Basionym: N/A
Synonyms: N/A
Family: Ectobiidae
Common name: Gold Banded Clown Roach.

Hemithyrsocera vittata is a stunningly beautiful roach with yellow patterns on its black body. Nymphs start as mostly red with black and thin yellowish bands. All stages of this cockroach climb smooth surfaces and also this roach is moving fast. This is an arboreal species of cockroach that is not difficult to keep and breed. Hemithyrsocera vittata roaches belong to the group generally called “flower roaches”, which are roaches that are close to flowers because they feed on their nectar.

Fun facts: Their antennae are in constant rapid motion; Nymphs move fast resembling working ants 😀

Hemithyrsocera vittata, cockroach care

Size: adults may grow up to 20 mm; newborns are approximately 2.5 mm.
Activity: daytime; though it’s a very active species.
Terrarium: Hemithyrsocera vittata is an arboreal species and thus their enclosure should equally be vertically oriented with a couple logs to climb on and one or more foliage plants; Aroid plants will do fine, or similar looking house plants with an upright growth. I have Syngonium angustatum in my setup. If real plants are not possible to add, then go for artificial ones. Special attention must be paid so that the enclosure is escape-proof, bearing in mind that the nymphs are teeny-tiny, run fast and climb on any surface; and the adults can also fly. Be sure to also check out our premium substrate. They also need some hiding spots to go under and hide themselves when they need to. These can be carton egg cases, cork bark, or hard bark from other trees.
🏠 Check out also our escape-proof terrarium.
Temperature: 18 to 28°C
Humidity: 55% – 70%
Diet: bee pollen, fish flakes; soft fruits, cucumber, insect jelly, some decaying leaves & white wood.
Can climb?: all stages can climb smooth surfaces.
Can fly?: both sexes develop wings and they can fly.
Burrowing?: not usually.
Growth rate: Growth rate depending on temperature and diet. Generally speaking they don’t grow fast.
Lifespan: About 2 months for males and 2 years for females. Lifespan has also to do with the temperature, so if it is a bit cold, they live a bit longer.
