Synonyms: Opisthoplatia maculata, Polyzosteria orientalis, Polyzosteria pictetiana.

Common name: Amphibious Litter Cockroach, Red and black cockroach.
Opisthoplatia orientalis is a beautiful cockroach with a red “skirt” on the edge of its body and a transparent edge on the front part of its pronotum! Only the adults develop that red color and it is more intense on males, which are half the size of the females. Though they are climbers, they usually remain hidden under the cork bark slabs during the day, exploring the taller areas when lights go off. As many other roaches it can move fast, can climb smooth surfaces, but cannot fly. The species epithet orientalis means that it is native to the East part of the world.
Opisthoplatia orientalis, cockroach care
Size: adults may reach a length of 30 mm.
Activity: night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep ⅓ moist by spraying and/or with moss. The substrate can be a mixture of peat (without fertilizer) mixed with crushed decaying leaves, some coconut coir and a little sand. Make it at least 5 cm deep so that the nymphs can bury in it when they need to. They also need hiding spots to go under and hide themselves during the day. These can be carton egg cases, cork bark, or hard bark from other trees. If possible add a couple tree branches so that they can climb when they want to.
⚠️ Their terrarium needs to be escape-proof, so that the adults cannot squeeze through the lid and escape.

Diet: This species appreciates a variety of fruits and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, apples. They also eat decaying leaves, fish-flakes, protein-based isopod food and they enjoy the weekly insect jelly.
Can climb?: yes; an escape-proof container must be used (nymphs cannot climb).
Can fly?: no
Difficulty: moderate.
Reproduction rate: prolific.
