Lichen is like a gourmet food of high nutritional value for many arthropods – especially detritivores. Lichen is alive and it is actually a symbiotic partnership of two seperate organisms: a fungus and an alga (plural algae). Some animals, such as Merulanella isopods and the Corydidarum magnifica roaches, actually need lichen in their diet in order to keep them alive. And for other isopods, such as Cubaris spp, is also a highly important food, especially for the most tropical, high-end Cubaris isopods. Listed for sale are various sizes lichen twigs packed per 500 ml.
Usage
Place the twigs in the moist part of the isopodarium / enclosure and spray them with water at least weekly. Preferred is three times per day.
Storage
You can store the unused lichen twigs on a well-lit location, that you regularly keep moist by spraying. Don’t put them in a closed storage box, because due to the lack of air-flow, mold will start forming. A little mold is certainly not a problem, for detritivores, but it’s better to store the lichen twigs in a box with sufficient air circulation.

The number of lichen sticks varies according to the size of the sticks. They fit in a 500 ml bag.
Can I leave the lichen twigs dry?
As lichen is a living organism composed of fungus and alga, they require moisture and good light. If you store them in a dry container, they will stay fine for one to two weeks, but expect gradually the lichen on the twigs to die off.
Is lichen sterilized?
For lichen, the only way to be sterilized is to soak the lichen twigs in water for one day, and on room temperature, ensuring that you don’t induce hibernation to any possible hitchhiker. So even if it’s not expected after that procedure, bugs to arise, it is still possible to appear some times, as some hitchhiker arthropods might not drown.
