Elliptorhina javanica is a beautiful roach, always in the top list of those keeping roaches as pets. Its common name – Halloween hissing cockroach – derives from its black and orange-yellow striped coloration and its hissing sound when disturbed, which is produced when they forcefully expel air through the specially-adapted respiratory openings (spiracles) on the fourth segment of their body. Both the adults and nymphs of this species can climb smooth surfaces. A specialized container with rubber sealing under the lid or the use of a thick layer of vaseline barrier at the top of the enclosure is a must! However, it could not survive outside of their enclosure.

Elliptorhina javanica, cockroach care

Size: adults may reach a length of 50 mm.
Activity: night; early morning.
Terrarium: keep ⅕ moist with some moss. The substrate can be a mixture of peat (without fertilizer) mixed with crushed decaying leaves, some coconut coir and a little sand. Make it at least 5 cm deep so that the nymphs can bury in it when they need to. They also need hiding spots to go under and hide themselves during the day. These can be carton egg cases, cork bark, or hard bark from other trees.
⚠️ Their terrarium needs to be escape-proof, so that the roaches cannot squeeze through the lid and escape.
Temperature: 27 – 32°C
Humidity: 65 – 80%
Diet: omnivorous; fruits, greens & vegetables, fish flakes, decaying leaves and some cat / dog kibble. They can be extremely picky eaters, neglecting food items other roach species eat readily. They also enjoy the weekly insect jelly.
Can climb?: both adults and nymphs can climb smooth surfaces.
Can fly?: no
Burrowing?: mostly nymphs.
Difficulty: easy to moderate.
Growth rate: normal to slow.
Reproduction: it seems a diet consisting mainly of oranges can trigger them to start reproducing, and also temperatures 27 to 30°C.
Lifespan: About 2 – 3 months for males and 2 – 3 years for females. Lifespan has also to do with the temperature, so if it is a bit cold, they live a bit longer.
