Characteristics and suitability of White Wood Charcoal
Less processed: This charcoal from white wood is a less processed form, compared to the common charcoal, retaining more of its original plant material and nutrients. Specifically, white wood charcoal is free from any harmful additives or contaminants that could affect your animals.
Moisture content: White wood charcoal contains more organic matter and nutrients and it has higher moisture levels and thus can provide a more organic environment beneficial for detritivores, like isopods, since they can digest it more easily and utilize its energy.
Usage
You can place it at the bottom of the isopodarium and then add the substrate. I am placing it at the far end in the moist area of the isopodarium. But I place one or two pieces also above the substrate for isopods to bask on it.
There are various pieces charcoal, also for larger setups / terraria. It’s so soft you can easily brake it with your hands.
Benefits of charcoal for detritivores
The “Microbial Hotel” (Bioactive Support): The most significant benefit to the invertebrates themselves – other than charcoal shavings mixed in the substrate – is indirect: charcoal supports the food they eat.
Surface Area: The microscopic nooks and crannies in a single piece of charcoal provide massive surface area for beneficial bacteria and fungi.
Trophic Upgrading: Detritivores don’t just eat decaying leaves; they eat the microbes on the leaves. Charcoal acts as a permanent breeding ground for these microbes, ensuring a constant supply of high-protein “biofilm” for the invertebrates to graze on.
Direct Consumption and Mineral Intake: While not their primary food source, many keepers observe their invertebrates nibbling on charcoal.
Mineral Access: Some types of charcoal (like “White Wood Charcoal”) are less processed and retain original plant minerals that can be beneficial.
Digestive Aid: Much like birds eat grit, some detritivores may ingest small amounts of charcoal to help neutralize internal toxins or aid in processing tough cellulose from rotten wood.
